i wrote the following a few days before venturing out to the desert. since then, my life has been altered, i am permanently not the tim i was when i wrote this.... i was dreaming when i wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray...
ever since this past weekend, i've been in the zone dj-wise.
most of my life consists of me fighting off near-constant random thoughts about pretty much every thing i encounter on a daily basis.
yes, when i dj, i have the ability to focus better and more intensely than any other time i devote to creative ventures.
it's the one time in which i, incredibly, can take all of my scattered brain cells and shove them into one zone.
even if for a while.
it's my escape.
honestly, NOTHING else really matters much to me when i'm DJing.
hence, it's my basis, my trueness, my everything.
music is my lifeblood.
this kind of mindset is where i need to be all of the time.
or at least the large majority of my time.
right, i have a point here.
hi.
so ever since this last weekend, i've been primed, focused, excited, gearing up, and playing music more than i have in months. at the very least, this dedicated.
so tonight was a GREAT warm-up to the much-much larger main event this weekend, as i travel eastward from my wonderful homeland to spend some excellent QT with fellow overthinkers, revelers, and freakballs.

Heading To Ghana

I have to confess something.
I tell my old friends in Michigan that i just don't have time for sports anymore.
They don't interest me.
They're a waste of time, energy and investment.
I'm too busy.
I have better things to do.
Sports are lame.
This coming from someone who's highly competitive (though not very good at any sport, though i can hold my own if pushed/peer-pressured).
From someone who grew up in a family that cherished football on Sundays, Nascar and related auto racing events on Saturday nights, attended a Big Ten university and lived in the athlete-heavy dorms for a year.
I was never a die-hard sports fan but i was into it enough. i rooted for my home team.
i got excited when 'we' won.
but as i got older, i got busier. other things took precedent.
it became a chore to follow sporting events.
too much effort. other things are more important.
time becomes increasingly precious.
yeah, i know, shut the fuck up already and make my point.
right.
yes.
so yeah...my confession:
i've really been getting into the world cup in the last few weeks.
it's fun. it's exciting. it's a totally different thing entirely from American-exclusive sports.
this is worldwide. it's much much bigger.
i think it really dawned on me how big it was when i was in greece a month ago.
people were INTO IT.
it was evident everywhere, most definitely in munich, where i sat in the airport for a five-hour layover after missing a connecting flight to athens.
since the world cup is being held in germany, the pre-hype was everywhere you looked. every single store seemed like it had SOMETHING celebrating the world cup.
the logo was inescapable.
magazine covers touted the world's biggest stars, most notably Ronaldinho, who plays for Brazil, the defending World Cup champs.
At first glance, i thought Ronaldinho is an odd looking chap, for sure.
But then i watched him play.
And he's just mezmerizing. He's so good.
He should be, since he's rated the #1 Soccer player in the world.
I guess i realized that i should catch on and see what's up with what is definitely the biggest sporting event on planet Earth.
you know?
here in america we are so insular, so focused on ourselves, so self-important, that we think the whole world should do what we do. we've got our own sports, our own 'world' series type events.
this is so huge. i just love catching even a flicker of the excitement generated by the various matches from day to day, getting to know various countries and their players.
I'm not necessarily rooting for anyone but i like watching Brazil (who doesn't like a winner?), Germany, England, Spain, and so many others.
Living where i'm do, i'm fortunate enough to be surrounded by people from all over the world when watching most of the games. People with actual vested interest in their country's team, as these incredible athletes compete in a game all at once both relatively simple and complex.
I never thought i'd ever be so into a sporting event but this is different.
As i read or heard somewhere, the World Cup is like 30 days of the Superbowl every single day.
I mean, movie studios are holding off on releasing their super big blockbusters until after the World Cup is over in July because movie attendance dwindles so considerably during the event.
It also means more because it only happens once every four years, so a country has bragging rights for a long-ass time.
Unlike American sports, where pretty much the "world champion" holds onto that title for less than a year.
i dunno...i finally get it.
i finally understand the fascination and fervor surrounding the event.
i don't necessarily think i'll become an avid soccer watcher after this.
but i think i'll at least pay a bit more attention to it.
wait...i was just thinking of something else.
i like it because it gives me a sense of unity with people from all over the globe.
for one month, the entire world is focused on it.
we're talking like a billion people easily.
probably more than that, but i have no stats and i don't feel like looking that shit up right now.
for a brief time, we can all sorta forget our various cultural differences, root for our favorite teams, and have a damn fine time doing it.
the camaraderie.
and hell, we need something positive to think about for a change.
fuck yeah.
world cup fever.
i have it.

Pigs In Space
Never mind the cigars, I'm fucking back.
I know, i realize i'm completely inconsistent, noncommittal, and unwilling to be disciplined.
I know all this.
But times are changing.
Sure, you've heard this before.
And sure, i could falter again.
But i'm sick of fucking faltering.
I'm fucking sick of being a slacker.
I'm fucking sick of being fucking nondependable.
so yeah, there's my thing.
they said 'it's over fer tibet. don't waste yer time.'
tibet is still here.
and i am tibet.
just like it, really.
people often think i'm from tibet.
and i like to say the word diaspora.
even though i have trouble saying it.
actually, recently, while traveling in Greece (i went to Greece, fuckers), many people thought i was german.
little kids at the acropolis said 'hello' in english to tina b, but to me they said whatever the fuck the germans say to one another when greeting.
and that's profound proof.
but anyway, there's time for all this breakdown later, just like there's time enough for counting, when the day is done.
i celebrate my oeuvre.
and i'm ready to expand into larger quarters.
and fatten my motherfucking oeuvre.
that's what i'm talking about.
which...makes a lot of sense, right?
i thought you wouldn't agree.

Every Five I Think Of You
1. Scissors For Lefty, BOTH, Noise Pop festival, Tuesday - I've heard lots of things about SFL but this was the first time i've seen them. Impressive. Their sound seems very british, so it's no big surprise they were signed to Rough Trade. i even bought their cd - yay. Some of their stuff reminds me of early-era Cure, yet other times they have a sort of affected, out-of-leftfield meandering sort of vibe. The record is a little slower than i would have expected, considering the sort of quietly intense vibe they threw out at the show. The lead singer, in particular, has a strange magnetism about him. I expect their Rough Trade record to be even better. i thought they were much better than the headliner, Every Move A Picture, which seemed more than a BIT too polished, i.e. boring. A poor man's Franz Ferdinand. It was clear by the difference in the crowd -- most of the SFL fans seemed to have disappeared when EVAP went on.
2. Running With Scissors, by Augusten Burroughs - Continuing on the scissor theme, i just finished this memoir that originally came out in 02. hilarious, setin amherst and northampton, Mass., in 70s/80s. He's a good writer, in a deadpan, succinct sort of way. I'm definitely gonna check out the sequel, Dry.
3. Space Mtn., Thursday, Cafe Dunord - I caught them Thursday night at Cafe Dunord when i was supposed to be watching David Bazan (he WAS pretty funny but we needed cocktails so we wandered downstairs) and Sam Prekop and Archer Prewitt. Anyway...Space Mtn, I had never heard them before but i was way into them, good pop/rock with a lead female vocalist, Dina Waxman. They sort of reminded me of (dare i say it?) Veruca Salt. The band might hate me for saying that but oh well.
4. Matthew Dear as Audion Fabric 27 - I'm so liking this new mix by detroit's Matt Dear. Dark, sometimes pummeling, sometimes skittery and fractious, minimaltechno just for you. Crispy too! i think he's one of the few people that played both SXSW AND WMC this year. My favorite tracks are many but I've really been digging on Billy Dalessandro's "Come With Me [Jon Gaiser Remix]," mainly because i totally LOVE Gaiser's thwippy sort of techno, as well Robert Babicz's "Battlestar," which is just insanely awesome. Looks like Mr. Dear will be returning to San Francisco April 22 at Boca!
5. Noise Pop - i didn't make it to SXSW this year but i feel like I made up for it with Noise Pop. I really liked the wide variety of music available each night and checked something out every night except for last night and tonight. Even if i don't like everything (and i haven't - We Are Scientists, despite their witty website, were particularly bland and ungood), the bottom line is the festival provides great exposure to a shit-ton of bands. And that rocks.

Chunky Muzzle

Is it time for the percolater?
No?
That's bullshit, really.
It's a damn good thing I'm sober.
Or else my hologram would shiv your ass from here to kingdom clone.
Speaking of clones, i'm awaiting the day clones are here and readily available.
I'm ready.
I'm down.
See, I ain't afraid of the future.
Even some very wise men have told me "fight the future, fuck the past."
Those wise men would be the men from the band Mindless Self Indulgence.
Which, is something.
Johnny Urine is a fine man.
I saw MSI open for Korn once. That was fucking weird.
Not as weird as the mood I'm in right now.
Which, is something.
If you're counting sheep.
Huh, i've never counted sheep to try to go to sleep.
Instead, I use such tried-and-true methods as turning the TV on, which always seems to rock me to the hardcore REM sleep tip, or spooning, particularly when i'm spooned.
being spooned is a good thing.
I recommend it to all red-blooded americans.
however, i must warn you that i'm a blue-blooded american, spawned in afghanistan, just south of pittsburgh, before you reach the turnpike.
turn left, or hang a louis, as they say in pangea, to the next episode.
speaking of episodes, why the fuck is everyone who wears pants into that show Lost.
to be real here, i just haven't been feeling the tv at ALL in the last year.
it's strange.
actually, i haven't really been into film much of late either.
i mean, shit, i have my small collection of dvds, but those are for the sabbath, which i periodically keep holy.
despite not being jewish.
i mean, being jewish would mean that i killed jesus.
And i ain't no pontiaus pilate, even on a bad day.
i can't take that much power.
i do need some power though. just to keep me sane.
i mean, shit, i can understand how ol' george w. likes his current position.
a total rich party boy.
or as they say on the Yale campus, because my hologram has been there many times and holy shit...
i was just playing Orbital's blue album and was just enjoying "You Lot" but now the song that's on now, sucks my royal toes.
despite the color of my skin.
i must change it.
not that you can relate.
you hate america.
